New graphite-based MMC: ACM-H1 and ACM-H2

We have developed new materials with an unprecedented balance of thermal conductivity, which is second only to diamond, higher than that of copper, thermal expansion as small as ceramics, and a specific gravity of less than 1/4 that of copper.

Advanced Composite Co., Ltd. (Headquarter: Obuchi, Fuji City, Shizuoka Prefecture; President: Takatoshi Shoji) has developed new graphite-derived materials of MMC: Metal Matrix Composite, ACM-H1 and ACM-H2. The new materials will start to be supplied as a new lineup of our aluminum-based MMC.

Using our unique core technology, the Squeeze Casting method (high pressure casting), we have successfully developped a new manufacturing method to  design physical properties arbitrarily such as thermal conductivity, thermal expansion, strength, etc. according to the required needs.

The newly developed “ACM-H series” are MMCs made by combining aluminum and graphite.  Until now, no material with such characteristic values existed. ACM-H1 & H2 are the materials that greatly contribute to heat dissipation and exhaust heat and has a low coefficient of thermal expansion. Features that graphite does not have are (1) the lowest coefficient of thermal expansion ever, and (2) excellent high rigidity. (3) Possible to reduce the weight of current products using copper (e.g. heat sinks), because it has a higher thermal conductivity than copper, (4) lighter than aluminum.

2. Product features and technical overview:

Composite materials such as aluminum and graphite
① Thermal conductivity: Possess 1.2 times the thermal conductivity of copper (values  are high not only in the vertical direction but also in the horizontal direction)

② Coefficient of thermal expansion: Approximately 1/5 that of copper, as small as ceramics (semiconductors, etc.)

③ Strength (bending strength): 2.5 times that of graphite, high rigidity with excellent damping properties

④ Lightweight: Density is less than 1/4 of copper and smaller than aluminum

⑤ Possible to design arbitrarily the characteristic values ​​and add functions according to needs by changing the compounding with our unique technology.

⑥ 400mm x 400mm is possible

3. We will start supplying the sample materials from June 2023, for practical use, and aim to establish a manufacturing method for mass production within 2023.


As the application development of the “ACM series”, we offer a wide range of items from heat countermeasures to structural members, mainly for applications such as heat sinks and semiconductor mounting substrates as substitutes for graphite, copper and Al-SiC, and propose them as sustainable new materials for the SDG’s era.
